July 28- day trippin' to the beach

2009.07.28
Yesterday I decided to drive to the beach for the day. This was an outing- 2-3/4 hours there and 2-1/2 hours back, but a lovely relaxing day and worth the drive.

Look up! There's a man standing over the toll booth! (You don't see that very often.)

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge! You may have seen this from such posts as Liiiiiisa's trip to Assateague. ;-)

Why I don't bother to try and grow corn. Much of the eastern shore of Maryland is just covered in corn fields like this. (and eastern shore corn is sooooo good as well).
:-)

Hey little gull! At one point when the wind picked up, my umbrella popped out of the sand and went rolling down the beach. The people set up next to me chased it down and caught it for me.

Driftwood. You don't see a whole lot of it like you do on the Pacific beaches.

Ahhh. enjoying my packed lunch with a lovely view (annotated)

self portrait. ;-)

ah, the relaxing sound of crashing waves.

waves breaking on a jetty

sea kayakers getting ready to launch...

making their way in....

and off they go!

dune grass

more dune grass

shells and rocks- had to time this shot between waves! ;-)

pylons

I took a half hour walk down the beach from where I had my blanket and chair. One little stretch had these flags- I think it was due to a falling apart jetty thing they didn't want people swimming around.

I paid to park right by the water at the State Park just north of Rehoboth Beach (the southern park of Cape Henlopen State Park), which made for a lovely big stretch of sand all to myself. Further south and they were packin' 'em in like sardines. ;-)

Lifeguards on duty.

lovely shadows in the sand...

From this dune fencing. Dunes tend to be very fragile. One big hurricane that makes its way up the coast can wipe them out.

An English woman owns this place. You folks across the pond don't realize what a treat it is to get proper fish n chips- and at the seaside no less. This was my plan for dinner before I made the drive back- get some to take away...

and enjoy it whilst sitting on the boardwalk, facing the ocean. Ah, the simple pleasures... ;-)

The sun setting over eastern shore farmland on the drive home.

itch4travel What a fantastic series and it looks like you had a great time!!! You're making me want to go do the Chesapeake area again (been there quite a few times) and where would we be without our EZPass! That thing is the BEST!

ShangriLa What does annotated mean here?
Hope you had a good day out. Looks like it.

wapsy what a lovely day out. Clever British girl doing fish and chips. Do the locals like it?
wapsy · 2009-07-30: 05:28
thisismizb Thanks, all. I wore sunscreen, but missed a few places. Yowza. ;-). Yes, that's ketchup with my chips, but yes, I also put a little malt vinegar on them, and yes, the locals seem to like it. I wish we had one in Bawlamore- like in Fells Point for all the weekend drinkers. The gal behind the counter said the owner is starting to think "franchise". We'll see...
Poppy- I so know how you must feel- see all my posts for January and February! ;-)

DutchCookie what a great day this looks like, but tjeez what a long drive that is for a day. For us that would be half way to France and I ain't driving that far for just a day. Funny how that works, we'd drive for hours when we were in the States easily. Thanks for taking us along hon!
