July 14- out n about in NYC

2009.07.14
I started the day by going to the Met to see the Francis Bacon show. Nice restrospective. What a tragic and skewed view that guy had- but beautiful in a sad and tragically skewed way. ;-)

Met up with Webs after for lunch and a walk along the new park, the "Highline" built on old, unused elevated rail tracks near the meat packing district. This Arnold Palmer (1/2 iced tea, 1/2 lemonade (in this case fresh lemonade) cost me $5. Ah, New York ;-) (the salad was reasonable though. For some reason drinks- even non-alcoholic- just cost more up there)

My salad- super healthy- good thing, too because I was about to have my share and then some of local sweet treats.

Like these- mini-cupcakes. I picked chocolate.

Look at this display case! (we cut through Chelsea Market on the way to the Highline)

Cute, summery cookies.

Me with my mini cupcake.

Look at these New York themed cookies- so cute!! (and pricey- all that decorating costs, though)

Next stop, the brownie shop. Lucky for me they had minis there, too!

Some famous baker lady works out of the market. Look at this wonderful kitchen bakery.

On to the Highline. Like Webs said in her post, it was built to make good use of these abandoned railroad tracks which had started to "return to nature". They kind of worked with that theme in designing it, leaving some of the old track, wildflower plantings, and a rail like and organic feel to the design.

One section had these excellent lounge chairs built right in.

Look at this moth- it looked just like a leaf! Natural camoflage.

Some of the "rail feel" in the design.

Cool looking buildings you can see while walking along it.

Inspired by Liiiiiiisa. ;-)

They even kept some of the sort of broken windows and unkempt-ness of the surrounding buildings. It makes it rather interesting and adds to the atmosphere.

Purty flaur

Me, getting my obligatory tourist shot. That's the Empire State Building, just behind me to the left.

I believe this is the Maryland State Flower, the black eyed Susan.

Statue of Liberty just to the right of center.

more inspired by Liiiisa...

and one more. Such interesting views from the Highline.

They were shooting something with Chris Kattan (formerly of Saturday Night Live) nearby. It must've just been a commercial or something as we only saw one combination grip and electric truck and one wardrobe/dressing room trailer, and the crafts services table was pitiful. ;-)

We saw an ice cream truck with this menu. We don't get ice cream trucks with this kinda menu round my way, that's for sure! ;-)
(btw, I got some of the ginger ice cream- super yummy!)

Then, Webs put me on the right subway and I met some friends who lived down in the Battery Park City area. This is their dog, Maggie, who is super sweet. She loves chasing leaves and catching them in her mouth. It's funny to watch.

We walked down to the marina area for some drinks n snacks.

Here they are, Jill and Channa.

We drank margaritas and ate snacks, and chatted and watched the sun go down over the Hudson.

It says "One need never leave the confines of New York to get all the greenery one wishes"

SoulCurry Hello, pretty lady!! #4, 5 & 6 are making me feel weak with hunger. Are the thingies in #8 cookies? Or fridge magnets? (You can see what's on my mind!).

KateR Cupcakes! They look fantastic. Hm, I wonder if the fridge magnet cookies would work in the magnet exchange?

websterella They're cookies you eat. As we passed the ice cream truck I was mad at myself for having gelato in Chelsea Market.
