Donnell calls this lighting the Hollywood Technique, where the light is almost directly above and slightly in front of the subject. The effect is a slimming of the face and is characterized by the "butterfly" shadow under the subject's nose.

These are my pictures from our first photography class with Donnell. We talked about the basics: Shutter speed, ISO, Aperture and f/stop, white balance. Then jumped right into shooting with only one light source. Chad modeled his silhouette and then Donnell's studio partner Craig sat for a demonstration of how the location of the light source can change the appearance of the face. Our first assignment: try this at home.
