Build in stages from 1834 to 1845 the Building was originally barrack and a flour mill which never worked successfully. It was converted to a penitentiary in 1853 and guttered by fire in 1897.
The collapsed building to the right was the Hospital and slightly to the left of the hospital is Smith O’Brien’s Cottage (restored) The buildings to the left are the Officers’ Quarter (partly restored)
The Large grass area in the front of the building is the oval where convict and guards often played cricket on sundays. There is still a cricket pitch there. The oval was leveled by the convict using only hand tool.
